Some issues span the political spectrum. This is one of them. Don’t let duplicity between the federal government and a handful of large public corporations end the Internet as we know it. Thanks to Bruce Schierstedt for passing this along.
It’s unfortunate you’ve bought into the network neutrality fallacy. The network has never been neutral. This whole campaign is about reregulating the telcos, the cable companies, etc. At least the film is somewhat honest about that…
Let me offer one example of network unnreutrality that benefits everyone… Many ISPs block port 25 so that consumers’ computers can’t flood mail servers with SPAM. Had they not done that, today’s SPAM levels would have been hit 5 years ago.
One kind of service that will not be possible under net neutrality… Remote medical monitoring on inexpensive consumer DSL or cable. Why? Because those packets from a heart monitor, though low bandwidth compared to video, require guaranteed quality of service. Under network neutrality, those packets can’t be given higher priority than packets from the kid next door sharing sharing movies that haven’t hit the theaters yet. You’d have to pay for more expensive dedicated lines, probably be limited to DSL since cable is shared bandwidth, and the costs may be a wash compared to staying in the hospital or rest facility.
I really wish you’d look into the imlications of this thing before buying into the hype.
